Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park
Discover the wild side of Florida with endangered Florida panther, red wolf, manatee and whooping crane, plus black bear, bobcat and, of course, alligators.
An astounding number of fresh and saltwater fish still congregate in the natural spring bowl — large jacks, snapper, snook and others. A unique underwater structure, the Underwater Observatory allows visitors to "walk underwater" beneath the spring's surface to watch the various fish and manatees swim about. Gaze down into the depths of the first-magnitude spring and perhaps catch a glimpse of fish and manatees in their natural habitat.
The park also features a variety of captive animals such as alligators, black bears, red wolf, Key deer, flamingos, whooping cranes and the oldest hippopotamus in captivity. The native wildlife that reside in the park serve as ambassadors for their species, providing visitors face-to-face connections with the animals and their habitats. Each with a unique life story, all of the animal inhabitants are here for the same reason - they are unable to survive in the wild on their own.
Experiences:
Birding- The 0.75-mile Pepper Creek Trail offers opportunities for birding and nature study. The trail is paved for wheelchair accessibility.
Boat Tours- Our boat tours transport visitors along Pepper Creek from the visitor center to the west entrance of the state park, weather permitting. Boat captains provide an introduction to the park and the Florida Park Service. Native wildlife is identified along the way. The boats are accessible with a ramp for persons with mobility devices.
Geo-Seeking- Explore the park in a new and challenging way. Experienced Geocachers have requested permission to hide caches containing trinkets, treasures or information in various places around the park.
Hiking -A 1.10-mile trail with paved trails and elevated boardwalks winds throughout the wildlife park. Benches and rain shelters are conveniently located along the trail.
Picnicking- Covered picnic pavilions are located in the Garden of the Springs and behind the parking area at the main entrance on U.S. 19. Other picnic tables are located near the main spring and Fish Bowl and alongside the Alligator Lagoon.
Tours- Manatee programs are offered daily. The programs are presented alongside the main spring at the bleachers overlooking the Fish Bowl Underwater Observatory.
