
Over 13 miles of trails have been developed on Two Mile Prairie. Foot traffic only is allowed on the hiking trails.
The Johnson Pond Trail is approximately 2.6 miles of yellow 2”x6” blazed hiking trail and is included in the Great Florida Birding Trail Program.
The Oxbow Trail is a yellow 2”x6” blazed 0.76 mile hiking trail with direct access to/ from the Withlacoochee River and to two
primitive campsites.
Horseback riding is allowed on the designated trail. Bear Head Hammock Trail is approximately 10.04 miles and includes two wet-weather by-pass trails. Horses must stay on designated trail, marked in 6” blue painted bands around the trees.
Johnson Pond Trailhead provides picnicking, hiking, birding and fishing. No fee required.
Oxbow Trailhead provides primitive camping, picnicking, hiking and fishing. No fees, but reservation is required for camping.
Bear Head Hammock Trailhead provides equestrian access, restroom, picnicking, and primitive camping. Reservation and fee required for camping and a per person Day Use Fee applies.
Two Mile Prairie is home to a diverse mixture of animal and plant species. Those animals and plants currently listed which have been sighted on the forest include: gopher tortoise, Sherman’s fox squirrel, whooping crane,
wood stork, American kestrel and several others. There are various natural communities found on the forest. They include sandhills, xeric hammock, scrub, basin marsh and sandhill upland lake.
During the past 8 years, restoration efforts have been made and emphasis placed on forest and wildlife management along with environmental education.
